Vision Therapy

At Aurora Eye Care, we are the only optometric clinic in Grande Prairie to offer vision therapy services to the Peace Region.

Correcting Eye Alignment & Improving Eye Teaming With Vision Therapy

Patients – children and adults alike – that have eye alignment concerns (such as strabismus or amblyopia) benefit immensely from vision therapy. This non-surgical process works to correct eye alignment and teaming problems through the use of specialized equipment, in-office exercises and testing, and in-home exercises.

The Goal of Vision Therapy

Vision Therapy is an individualized treatment program that is supervised by our Optometrists and designed to correct visual-motor and/or perceptual-cognitive deficiencies. Vision Therapy sessions include procedures designed to enhance the brain’s ability to control: eye alignment, eye teaming, eye focusing abilities, and eye movements.

How Vision Therapy Works

Visual-motor skills and endurance are improved through the use of specialized computer and optical devices, including therapeutic lenses, prisms, and filters. During the final stages of therapy, the patient’s newly acquired visual skills are reinforced and made automatic through repetition and by integration with motor and cognitive skills.

Who Can Benefit From Vision Therapy?

Children

Most of our vision therapy patients are kids. We commonly encounter eye teaming/pairing problems and alignment issues (the most prominent being strabismus) and have excellent success with vision therapy. We engage kids in fun activities and games to keep them interested and motivated throughout the vision therapy process.

Developmental Eye Exam

This exam focuses on a child’s eye skills beyond just vision and aims at finding their deficiencies and potential strengths. It assesses the presence and depth of an eye turn or lazy eye. If deficiencies are found, further investigation is done in that area to find the root problem.

Things that we look for include eye teaming, focusing and eye movement skills, as well as the way the brain processes the visual information. All of this contributes to a child’s success in the classroom.

Although vision therapy is best known for helping children, there are many adults who benefit from vision therapy. People who have an eye turn or a lazy eye can still have a chance to fix these problems as an adult with vision therapy. The skills which are trained are similar to those for children’s vision therapy, although a more mature approach is taken.

Other Areas Where Vision Therapy Helps

Athletes

Improving visual perception, decreasing reaction time, and aiding colour differentiation provides athletes a competitive edge. Vision therapy is an effective way to improve your performance on and off the field.

Aimed at providing children with a solid foundation of eye skills to enhance classroom learning. Typically a developmental eye exam is done to assess current skill level in many areas and then vision therapy is carried out to enhance deficient skills. Areas to enhance include eye movements, eye coordination, visual perception, hand eye coordination, spatial awareness and many more.

Brain injuries can cause a significant decrease in the functioning of the visual system. These eye problems can range from frank double vision to headaches and a feeling of fatigue after prolonged eye use. This is common following motor vehicle accidents, post-concussions, and after suffering from a stroke. Special attention is given to the visual system in a slow and steady approach to get as close as possible to returning the system to pre injury levels.
